Jet
boats are a New Zealand invention. Originally thought of as a mode of transport so that
farmers can check on stock in high country stations, Dart River takes advantage of a jet
boats manoeuvrability to gain access to areas of the river which would otherwise be inaccessible.
The forests of this region sit within a World Heritage Area, one of the only
natural sites of its kind that is accessible to the public. Our guides detail the fascinating
history of this area from the days of Gondwanaland, to quests by Maori for prized pounamu,
to the present day efforts of New Zealand’s department of conservation for the preservation
of the area.
Locations from the Lord of the Rings are a highlight to many visitors to this
region. Whilst walking amidst the ancient tress it is easy to see why Peter Jackson choose
this area for much of the filming of his epic trilogy.
The high country farmland that we journey through is the site of many other well know films
and advertising campaigns.
