Doubtful Sound
Wilderness Day Cruises
Doubtful Sound is an unspoiled and remote
wilderness of many moods; one minute clear, blue
and sun-drenched, the next mysterious and mist-
shrouded. When you discover Doubtful Sound, you will
be struck by its silence — a silence broken only
by birdsong, or maybe the rushing of a distant
waterfall.
Your Doubtful Sound adventure begins as you cruise
the crystal-clear waters of Lake Manapouri.
After disembarking at West Arm, you travel underground
by coach to see the Manpouri Power Station machine
hall*. Then it’s over Wilmot Pass, stopping along
the way to experience some of Fiordland’s most
dense rainforest and to view Doubtful Sound glistening far below.
On reaching Deep Cove, board our catamaran for
a three-hour cruise that takes in the most
dramatic scenery of Doubtful Sound.
Our skippers provide a detailed commentary
and point out highlights. Keep a lookout
for wildlife, as bottlenose dolphins frequently
come alongside our vessel, fur seals bask on the
rocks around the fiord, and rare penguins
can be observed at times.
*Access to the Manapouri Power
Station may not always be possible.

Excursion Includes:
On boarding a luxury glass-roofed coach in Queenstown, travel along the shores of Lake Wakatipu and through the rolling countryside to Manapouri. Then cruise across the crystal waters of Lake Manapouri to West Arm before boarding a coach and crossing the alpine route of Wilmot Pass through some of Fiordland’s most dense rainforest. On reaching Deep Cove, board a modern catamaran vessel, the Patea Explorer for a three hour cruise exploring the waterways of this serene and isolated fiord. There is plenty of time available to explore points of interest and view the spectacular alpine scenery including waterfalls, rainforest and mountains all the way out to the Tasman Sea. It is home
to bottlenose dolphins and fur seals and when in season, the rare Fiordland crested penguin. An on board nature guide with specialist knowledge of the region’s history, flora and fauna provides detailed interpretation in English with a roving microphone. On the return cruise, the vessel’s engines are turned off and passengers are treated to the ‘sound of silence’. There is also the opportunity to visit the Manapouri Power Station by coach before returning to Queenstown. Lunch options and complimentary tea and coffee are available on the vessel. Return to Queenstown is by helicopter (weather permitting) from Deep Cove. The helicopter flight is the ultimate way to view the spectacular alpine scenery including glaciers, rivers, lakes and rainforest. The helicopter will leave the fiord and take you on a scenic flight over the Kepler Mountains, the southern end of Lake Te Anau, Mavora Lakes and the Vonn Valley before landing in Queenstown. Transfers are provided to accommodation on arrival at Queenstown airport.
