Funyaks

Dart River Funyaks combines a 1 ¼ hours Jet Boating, 2 hour Canoe trip, Wilderness lunch, and 30 minute back road journey.

The Funyaks trip allows visitors to truly explore this area with the canoes (Funyaks) allowing access to parts of the river inaccessible by jet boat.

Jet boat for 1 ¼ hours to the upper reaches of the Dart River, where visitors disembark and inflate their own canoe.

After safety and paddling instruction, your Funyak journey begins.

Paddle downstream amidst glaciers, rocky peaks and dense rainforests. Explore the Rock Burn Chasm (accesable only by canoe).

Paddle to Paradise then transfer to an awaiting back coach for the return trip through Paradise, taking in Lord of the Rings locations en route.

Funyaks is a full day option, and includes lunch.

A Funyak is a wide and stable inflatable canoe, making it ideal for the Grade 2 Dart River.

It is suitable for all ages and average levels of fitness – no experience is necessary.

Important Information

In summer months sunscreen, sunglasses and sunhat are essential and insect repellent is recommended.
Bring very warm cloths in winter or cool weather. Eyewear is essential along with warm hat and gloves, a fleece jacket and windproof outer jacket.
There are 2 toilet stops on the trip. One at our Glenorchy base and one half way through the trip.

Jet boats are a New Zealand invention. Originally thought of as a mode of transport so that farmers can check on stock in high country stations, Dart River takes advantage of a jet boats manoeuvrability to gain access to areas of the river which would otherwise be inaccessible.

The forests of this region sit within a World Heritage Area, one of the only natural sites of its kind that is accessible to the public. Our guides detail the fascinating history of this area from the days of Gondwanaland, to quests by Maori for prized pounamu, to the present day efforts of New Zealand’s department of conservation for the preservation of the area.

Locations from the Lord of the Rings are a highlight to many visitors to this region. Whilst walking amidst the ancient tress it is easy to see why Peter Jackson choose this area for much of the filming of his epic trilogy.

The high country farmland that we journey through is the site of many other well know films and advertising campaigns.
