HISTORY OF THE SITE
Transit of Venus 1874

It was from the site of the Millennium Queenstown on December 9th 1874 that an American Scientific party under the auspices of the US Navy observed the rare phenomenon of a transit of Venus across the sun.

In Melbourne Street, standing on the same land as Millennium Queenstown, there is a unique monument which marks the exact site from which is notable observation was carried out.

The day of the transit was cloudy and rainy, however intervals of sunshine allowed vision of both the leading and latter edges of the planet onto the disc of the sun.

It was learned afterwards that bad weather had defeated all other observations throughout New Zealand.

Another transit occurred in December 1882 but the next will not be until 8 June 2004 in the new Millennium.

A monument to those who aspire to greatness and look to the heavens for inspiration.

Note: The menu is seasonal.
Special dietary considerations are catered to (notice required).
